Harford Campaign for Liberty Opposes Handout to TSA Body Scanner Manufacturer

Bel Air, MD July 10, 2012

The Harford County Council will vote tonight on a Resolution granting up to $100,000 from taxpayers of Harford County to a multi-billion dollar company that manufactures TSA-used body scanners in Edgewood, MD.

The Harford Campaign for Liberty opposes this use of taxpayer dollars and will work to inform the public about this legislation.

Resolution 12-15 was introduced by Council President Boniface at the request of Harford County Executive David Craig via the Economic Development department. This resolution also authorizes the State of Maryland to lend $750,000 to Smith’s Detection Corporation, a London-based firm that specializes in Detection equipment like x-ray scanners and bomb-detection equipment.

The role of government is to protect the rights and freedoms of the people and not to give taxpayer-funded handouts to large, wealthy, multinational businesses.

A vote in favor of this this resolution is a vote in favor of crony capitalism that works opposite the best interests of a free society. This resolution is the County Council picking winners and losers in Harford County, and ought not be suffered by free people.

Some Facts about Smith’s Detection–

Smith’s Group, PLC, is a multbillion dollar company based in London, UK. In 2011, they reported profits of more than $600MM. Here’s their website and the Consolidated Income Statement for 2011:

Smith’s Detection:

-On 7/2/12 announced a $16.9MM contract with the federal government at Aberdeen Proving Ground to produce chemical agent detectors.

-On 6/29/12 announced a $248.5MM contract with the Army, for “non-intrusive inspection systems and hardware” to scan people, vehicles, and cargo in Afganistan. The Army is expected to take delivery by 8/31/14 (The Obama administration has stated that almost all of our troops will be out of Afganistan by 2014)
-On 4/9/12 announced a $27.5MM contract for chemical agent detectors, communications adapter kits, another military items.
-On 3/26/12 Announced a $122MM contract to supply detection systems to the Doha Airport in Qatar, UAE
-On 12/1/11 announced a Navy contract of $9.4MM for meteorological devices

Smith’s Detection’s location in Edgewood, MD receives an Enterprise Zone Tax Credit. Since 2006, they have paid only 20% of their property taxes due to the County and State. This will phase out over time by 2016. They are also eligible for an income tax credit equal to at least $1,000 per employee hired at this location, and $6,000 per ‘economically disadvantaged’ employee over three years.

The Smith’s Detection Edgewood location currently employs 215 people, with plans to add 100 more jobs that will be moving to Edgewood from a location in Canada. The average wage for these jobs will be $74,000.

Here’s a sample draft of a letter to send:

Dear Representative,

I urge you to vote “NO” on H.R. 3523, the “Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act of 2011” (CISPA).

The American people depend on their elected representatives to be the guardians of their privacy rights, yet CISPA opens the door for unprecedented abuse.

Though CISPA is touted as being a harmless bill that enables voluntary “information sharing” between private corporations and government agencies, the “notwithstanding any other provision in law” clause it contains would essentially deem all existing privacy laws null and void for “cybersecurity” purposes.

In addition, CIPSA would allow the transfer of vast amounts of data between private entities and government departments without any requirement on removing personally identifying details.

And it prevents the American people from being able to take action against a private company that misuses their personal information or falsely labels them a threat.

Even in cases of intentional misuse of personal information by government agencies, a two-year statute of limitations virtually guarantees such abuses will go unchallenged.

Constitutional safeguards instituted to defend the fundamental principles that are supposed to set our nation apart must never be abandoned or traded for a false sense of security.

Though defending our country is the primary responsibility of the federal government, any such efforts must be undertaken with full respect given to the American people’s rights and freedoms.

“Cybersecurity” legislation that truly tackles the problem will not leave experts in the tech field scratching their heads as to what Congress is attempting to do. And the bill’s language would specifically target a clearly identified threat, instead of allowing seemingly anyone to access our most personal details.

I hope that I can report to my friends, neighbors, and  colleagues in our district that you upheld their right to privacy by voting against H.R. 3523, the “Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act of 2011.”

Liberty Action Needed to Protect Your Property Rights

Hello Friends. For the last several weeks you have been hearing about the fundamental problems with PlanMaryland.

  • Based on flawed and misrepresented data designed to support the objectives of the plan.

  • Limits your choices in housing and transportation.

  • Destroys property rights.

  • Gives land use decision making to the state and its unelected regulatory agencies.

  • Is based on a United Nations doctrine called Agenda 21.

  • Centralized decision making is less accountable to you the voter!

NOW there is an opportunity to undo some of the damage from PlanMD.
